An Iowa City man wanted for two separate failure to appear warrants was taken into custody after a foot-chase Wednesday night.

According to police reports, 21-year-old Daveon Curry of Scott Boulevard was a passenger in a vehicle traveling eastbound on Sandusky Drive around 7:15pm when the vehicle pulled into a driveway in the 2100 block of Davis Street. Curry exited the vehicle; an officer recognized him as having outstanding warrants and attempted to make contact.

Curry is accused of looking back at the officer as he was exiting the vehicle, and began running through backyards in the neighborhood. The officer gave lawful orders to stop, but Curry allegedly continued to flee until he was apprehended in the 2100 block of Bancroft Drive.

Curry reportedly smelled strongly of ingested alcohol, had slurred speech and bloodshot watery eyes. He refused a post arrest PBT, and allegedly stated that he ran because he knew he was wanted.

Curry is accused of failing to appear for arraignments for operating a vehicle without owner consent, driving while barred and driving while license denied or revoked from July of 2019, and 3rd offense OWI, possession of marijuana and driving while barred from December of 2018. Wednesday’s incident added public intoxication and interference with official acts charges, and if convicted on all counts, Curry could be sentenced to over ten years in prison.
