An Iowa City man has been taken into custody following a September incident when he allegedly was operating his vehicle while intoxicated, and fell off a retaining wall after parking.
Police reports indicate they were called to the 800 block of South Maiden lane for a welfare check on 54-year-old Steven Jacob of East Benton Street on the evening of September 13th. Upon meeting with Jacob, he reportedly admitted to being in an accident at the corner of Benton and Riverside Drive a few minutes earlier, at approximately 5:51pm. He allegedly told officers that the other driver slammed on the brakes in front of him.
Police say Jacob left the scene of the accident and parked his vehicle in a lot in the 800 block of South Gilbert Street. He attempted to separate himself from the vehicle when Jacob allegedly fell off a six-foot retaining wall, requiring medical attention.
While talking with Jacob, he allegedly admitted to drinking two alcoholic beverages prior to the accident, but police state that Jacob could not form complete sentences, had delayed responses to questions, and had an odor of ingested alcohol. A PBT showed a blood-alcohol reading of .195.
Due to the fall, an ambulance was called to transport him to the hospital where he received extended medical treatment. The officer requested a blood draw, and a warrant was requested on September 16th.
Jacob was booked into the Johnson County Jail on Sunday and charged with second offense OWI, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by a prison sentence of up to two years if convicted.
