Iowa City Police say a man threatened another motorist with a firearm during a Friday afternoon road rage incident.

According to arrest records, 26-year-old Charles Tate was eastbound on Kirkwood Avenue just after 1:45pm when he allegedly cut off another driver near Summit Street. The alleged victim’s vehicle hit the curb and stopped in the street.

Police say Tate then blocked the other vehicle in, got out of his car and began yelling at the other driver in a threatening manner.  The other driver put his car in reverse and drove around Tate’s vehicle.

Tate then allegedly pulled up to the other driver at a stoplight, pulled out a firearm and began waving it and yelling at him.

Police later found Tate at his Scott Park Drive residence. A firearm matching the one described by the other driver could be seen in plain view on Tate’s couch.

Tate was arrested and charged with Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon. If convicted, he faces a maximum of five years in prison.

Police say past calls for service show Tate has been involved in other, similar incidents in the past.
