A fired Iowa City Police officer is appealing his termination.

Terry Tack is accused of crashing his Toyota 4Runner into a utility pole after drinking at three different bars the night of November 24th.  He later pleaded guilty to a charge of Striking Fixtures Upon a Highway and was fined $65.

An ICPD investigation determined that Tack was intoxicated at the time of the crash and lied to officers during the course of the investigation. Tack was fired on January 21st, although online records indicate no formal Operating While Intoxicated or Providing False Information to Law Enforcement charges were ever filed.

Police say Tack initially fled the scene of the crash, and the next day asked another officer to help him fill out an accident report. Tack allegedly claimed he’d hit a rock on Governor Street, but the Iowa State Patrol says he actually struck a utility pole on East Benton Street.

Investigators say Tack didn’t remember going to the third bar, didn’t remember what he’d hit and had no idea how he got home.

According to the Press-Citizen, Tack filed an appeal to his firing on February 4th, arguing that the city “lacked proper cause” in terminating him. The city’s Civil Service Commission will hear Tack’s appeal at a public meeting Wednesday at the Iowa City Public Library.
