An Iowa City man has been charged with burglary and theft of a house under construction.

Authorities say that on January 3rd, a DeWalt air compressor was stolen from a home at 1512 Dickenson Lane. The compressor had the owner’s name written on it, and the owners of the home told officers that there had been previous burglaries of construction tools from the site, all with the victim’s name labeled on them.

Three days later, on January 6th, officers were called to the same location at 2am on reports of a burglary in progress. They arrested 31-year-old Justin Haigh of Sycamore Street and another individual, and they were charged with criminal trespass, possession of burglar’s tools, and burglary to a nearby vehicle which had just occurred.

Subsequent investigation of the incident led police to Haigh’s residence, and they reportedly located several of the items stolen from the site, including the air compressor, a DeWalt flashlight and a DeWalt sander with lithium battery. Video surveillance from the January 3rd incident and previous alleged burglaries show a person matching Haigh’s description.

Haigh has now additionally been charged with 3rd degree Burglary and 3rd degree Theft. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to seven years in prison.
