North Liberty Police say a Coralville man stole a bank card from a residence and used it to try to buy hundreds of dollars in gift cards from Walmart.

According to arrest reports, 34-year-old Darrell Routson of 8th Street was the only person at an apartment on Community Drive on New Year’s Eve. The next day the apartment’s resident noticed her bank card, a $250 check and $40 in cash missing.

Surveillance video at Walmart allegedly shows Routson trying to purchase $932.96 in gift cards at a self-checkout lane.

Routson has multiple previous theft convictions. He’s charged with 3rd Degree Theft and Unauthorized Use of a Credit Card Under $1,500. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of four years in prison.
