Allegedly trying to get free food in exchange for giving a woman back her lost cellphone has led to a Coralville man’s arrest.

Iowa City Police say a woman was at Martini’s on the Ped Mall just after 1:45am on January 26th when her iPhone 11 Pro Max fell out of her pocket and onto a bench. After she left the bar, another patron, 28-year-old Kirchner Williams of 13th Street, picked it up and also left the bar.

The woman called the phone when she noticed it missing. Williams answered and allegedly said he would return the phone if she brought him food. Police say she refused and asked Williams for his name, but he refused to give it. Williams allegedly asked her for the passcode multiple times, and when the woman refused, he allegedly told her “f— y’all”, hung up and refused to answer the phone again.

The woman used the Find My iPhone app to track her stolen phone to Williams’ residence. When police arrived, Williams allegedly told them he intended to return the phone and had only been joking about exchanging it for food.

Williams was arrested and charged with 3rd Degree Theft, an Aggravated Misdemeanor punishable by a maximum of two years in prison.
