A Cedar Rapids man was arrested early Friday after police alleged he was carrying a handgun while intoxicated in downtown Iowa City.

According to arrest reports, 23-year-old Jordan Burgett of 33rd Avenue Southwest was engaged in a fight outside the Union Bar with two other males at about 1:20am. An officer reported that he had to deploy OC spray to keep the three from fighting. Burgett is accused of fleeing the scene, but while speaking to staff at the Union, Burgett reportedly returned to the area.

Police ordered Burgett to the ground, but he allegedly refused requests to lie flat on the ground. He’s then accused of fleeing again, shedding outer clothing while doing so. Burgett was caught after a short foot chase and taken into custody.

Police accuse Burgett of having bloodshot watery eyes, impaired speech and balance, and having the odor of ingested alcohol. A search incident to arrest reportedly found a Sig Sauer P365 handgun in Burgett’s front waistband.

A check of Burgett’s records show that he has a permit to carry, but it’s invalid when intoxicated. He failed preliminary testing but refused all further attempts to determine his blood-alcohol level, including breath, blood or urine samples.

Burgett has been charged with Interference with Official Acts while carrying a firearm, possession of a firearm while intoxicated, disorderly conduct, public intoxication, and a controlled substance violation. If convicted on all charges, he could be sentenced to over seven years in prison.
