A Coralville man who failed to appear for his trial on abuse and public intoxication counts over two years ago has been arrested after being accused of OWI.

Police observed 27-year-old Edward Shultz of Holliday Road sitting in the driver’s seat of a Ford pickup in a No Parking area after 2am Wednesday. The officer was aware there was an active warrant for his arrest.

Shultz allegedly had bloodshot watery eyes, impaired speech and balance, and smelled of ingested alcohol. He reportedly admitted to drinking and showed impairment on SFSTs. He refused other chemical tests. He was taken into custody and charged with his first OWI, a serious misdemeanor punishable by a jail sentence of up to one year.

The warrant goes back to an incident where Shultz is accused of fighting with his girlfriend in the parking lot in the 900 block of 22nd Avenue in Coralville the evening of September 5th 2017. Multiple witnesses stated that Shultz was carrying the woman, who was kicking and screaming and yelling to let her go. She allegedly fell and scraped her forehead, but stated she wasn’t hurt by Shultz, who was allegedly intoxicated during the incident.

Trial was set for the following month but Shultz didn’t show, causing a warrant to be issued for his arrest. He faces public intoxication and domestic abuse assault charges for the incident.
