University of Iowa wrestlers may soon have a state-of-the-art facility to practice and train in.

Pending approval by the state Board of Regents, the facility would be built to the south of Carver Hawkeye Arena and be connected to the arena by tunnel.

The new facility would be funded entirely by gifts; the project already has over $9 million in commitments. Once the Board of Regents gives their approval, formal planning would begin with development of a budget and selection of an architect to design the facility.

A release from the Athletic Department says that the new facility would include expanding training space and feature a Hall of Champions to showcase the wrestling program’s legendary history.

Coach Tom Brands calls the proposed facility “an important step forward for the Iowa Wrestling program.”

In other wrestling news, the Department announced Tuesday that CAMBUS will do complimentary shuttle service from Hancher Auditorium for the three remaining dual meets, including Friday’s with second-ranked Penn State. Shuttles will start 90 minutes before scheduled meet times and will run until all riders are accommodated after the meets.
