A Tiffin man has been taken into custody after allegedly leaving the scene of an injury accident last month.

According to police, 36-year-old Dustin Young of Highway 6 Southwest was involved in the accident December 7th just before 6:30pm at the intersection of 640th Street Southeast and Utah Avenue Southeast in Lone Tree. The crash resulted in hospitalization of the victim, and it was reported that Young struck an SUV from behind while making a bad pass and fled the scene into a field.

An hour later, the vehicle, a 2006 Nissan Altima, was found engulfed in flames in a nearby field. Police say the vehicle had sever front end damage that would have made it hard to travel very far before overheating.

A witness statement alleges that Young was driving after drinking. An investigation into his digital phone records showed him traveling in the direction of the crash at the time. After the incident, a deputy allegedly observed a seatbelt impression on Young consistent with a recent crash. It’s also alleged that Young sent a text message to his spouse that said, “I will pay you back for the ‘effing car that blew up in my face.”

Young was arrested Monday afternoon and initially charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving bodily injury, a serious misdemeanor punishable by a jail sentence of up to one year if convicted.
