A Coralville man who was stopped late Monday for allegedly driving without his headlights on now faces decades in prison after police reportedly found multiple drugs and counterfeit money in the vehicle.

According to arrest reports, they stopped 30-year-old transient Brett Kriz just after 11pm on the I80 westbound ramp after they noticed him on the 900 block of First Avenue in Coralville without his lights on. Kriz’s vehicle allegedly had the odor of marijuana and Kriz himself was reported to have slow mumbled speech, droopy eyelids, and bloodshot eyes. He also allegedly gave them a false name and was unable to provide a driver’s license.

A requested K9 reported a positive hit on the vehicle, and the subsequent search allegedly turned up multiple baggies of methamphetamine, three dozen Clonazepam pills, four grams of marijuana, drug paraphernalia, a glass pipe with burnt marijuana inside, and a counterfeit $100 bill.

Police say Kriz fell asleep while being transported to the Coralville Police Department, and once there provided his real name. Kriz had trouble staying awake during field sobriety testing. A PBT showed a zero blood alcohol level, and a DRE determined that Kriz was under the influence of cannabis, a CNS stimulant and a CNS depressant.

Kriz allegedly refused a urine sample but said that if he gave one it would be completely clean of all drugs.

Kriz has been charged with 3rd offense marijuana possession, Forgery, 3rd or subsequent OWI, Class D drug possession, Class B controlled substance violation, two counts of failure to affix a drug tax stamp, possession of drug paraphernalia and providing false identification information. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to over fifty years in prison.
