The state of Iowa has settled two lawsuits against the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics totaling $7 million.

The first case involves Linn County resident Joyce Bohren, who underwent tumor resection surgery in March of 2014. According to the lawsuit, the then-52-year-old Bohren sustained permanent damage after her left middle cerebral artery was cut. According to the Press-Citizen, she still requires 24-hour care six years later.

The second lawsuit was filed by the parents of Ohio resident Ashlee Coverstone, who allege that in 2014 the UIHC failed to provide adequate discharge instructions that would have prevented her death days after she was discharged following spinal surgery.

As part of their settlements with the state, Bohren and Coverstone’s parents will each receive a total of $3.5 million. Those settlements were approved by the Board of Appeals on Tuesday.
