A pair of Iowa City convenience store employees face charges that they stole from their employers in separate, unrelated cases.
The first incident happened on Christmas Eve, when 47-year-old Nicole Haman of Western Road allegedly used her key to enter Fast Break on Naples Avenue just after 8:30pm…after the store had closed for the holiday.
According to Iowa City Police, Haman deactivated the alarm system and is seen on security video entering the safe under the cashier counter. The video shows her taking two Iowa Lottery books worth $300 each, as well as cash drops worth $400.
Police say Haman later admitted to the thefts. She was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 11:15 Thursday morning and charged with 3rd Degree Burglary, Forgery or Theft of Lottery Tickets and 4th Degree Theft. If convicted on all charges, she faces a maximum of 11 years in prison.
A similar, unrelated incident saw 39-year-old David Jackson of Esther Court allegedly steal lottery tickets from his employer, Delimart on Lower Muscatine Road. Police say that Jackson was working on the morning of January 4th when he took 20 scratch tickets valued at $198 over his eight-hour shift. He scratched them off, making them unsellable. Security video then shows him taking $107.43 from another cash register to pay for the tickets.
Jackson has two previous theft convictions. He was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 5pm Thursday and now faces a 3rd Degree Theft charge. If convicted, he faces a maximum of two years in prison.
