An Iowa City transient has been arrested and charged with intimidating a convenience store employee with a machete.
According to police, 33-year-old Terrell Grant has been trespassed from the Smokin’ Joes on Broadway Street previously, but was in the store again Wednesday at approximately 3:20pm.
The store clerk approached Grant and told him he had to leave. Grant is accused of pulling up his shirt and displaying a machete that was over eight inches inside his waistband, saying that he would “drop” the store clerk if she came any closer.
The clerk, reportedly afraid for her safety, called 911. Grant allegedly told police when questioned that he did show the clerk his weapon.
During a search subsequent to arrest, police found a pipe with residue in it. Grant allegedly said that it was the meth pipe he was using when the clerk told him to leave.
Grant was taken into custody and charged with first degree harassment, going armed with a knife over 8 inches long, trespass, and possession of drug paraphernalia. If convicted on all counts, Grant could be sentenced to over four years in prison. The clerk requested a no-contact order on Grant as well.
