A drunk driving suspect is accused of using anti-gay slurs against Johnson County sheriff’s deputies while resisting arrest.
Deputies pulled over 28-year-old Matthew Smith of 3rd Avenue in Iowa City just before 5:45 Friday night on the 4400 block of Oak Crest Hill Road. Officers say Smith had his headlights off and was all over the roadway, moving shoulder-to-shoulder and at one point driving on the wrong side of the road. Smith allegedly refused to provide his driver’s license and refused deputies’ instructions. He allegedly showed multiple signs of intoxication, refused all sobriety testing and was placed under arrest for Operating While Intoxicated.
During the arrest, Smith allegedly fought with officers and repeatedly called them “gay” and an anti-gay slur. He now faces an additional charge of Interference with Official Acts.
If convicted on both charges, Smith faces a maximum of 13 months in jail.
