An Iowa City man who allegedly repeatedly asked to be taken to jail was given his wish Monday night.
According to police, 24-year-old Harris Thompson of South Summit Street was called in by two separate callers around 7:35pm, indicating that he was stumbling and bumping into garbage cans on South Governor Street. One caller alleged that they saw Thompson throw up in a random trash can.
Police located Thompson in the 600 block of South Governor and observed very strong signs of impairment. They allege he had bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech, a strong odor of ingested alcohol, and had trouble standing still.
Thompson also allegedly had dirt and wetness on his pants from falling. He reportedly became very belligerent and uncooperative, stating over and over that he should be taken to jail.
Police complied with Thompson’s request. A subsequent search turned up a one-hitter pipe packed with marijuana. He was taken to the Johnson County Jail and charged with public intoxication, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to 14 months in jail.
