An estimated 175 people spent New Year’s Day hiking along the Beach to Dam Trail at Lake MacBride State Park.
The event was part of a statewide effort called “First Day Hikes”, which saw at least 4,358 people take part in hikes at 49 Iowa state parks Wednesday. That’s the highest attendance since the annual event began in 2012. The New Year’s Day hikes launched the Iowa state park centennial in 2020.
Of the 49 state parks, Walnut Woods State Park, West Des Moines, had the highest attendance with 410 hikers. The Lake MacBride event saw an estimated 175 hikers make the 2.5-mile trek from the main lodge to the spillway and back.
