Iowa City has a new mayor.
At a special meeting Thursday morning, the city council voted 5-2 to appoint Bruce Teague as the city’s new mayor. He was one of three candidates nominated.
Under Iowa City’s form of government, the mayor is an already-seated member of the city council voted on by other councilors, as opposed to being voted in separately by the public.
Teague’s appointment came after two rounds of voting, with some councilors switching their votes to reach a majority.
Teague succeeds Jim Throgmorton, who has served as mayor since 2016.
Mazahir Salih was named mayor pro tem.
