An Iowa City man told officers he intended to return a wallet he found Sunday, but allegedly used a credit card inside to get himself a hotel room instead.
According to police, 32-year-old Troy Frazier, who lists his address as Shelter House on Southgate Avenue, found the wallet outside of the Waterfront HyVee where the victim knew she last had it. Rather than turn it in to authorities, he allegedly took the cards out of the wallet and used one to check himself into the Americinn on Holiday Road in Coralville.
The woman’s bank notified her of the unauthorized charge, and she contacted police. They caught up with Frazier in the hotel room at about 10am Monday, where he allegedly said he took the cards with the intent of returning them to the victim, but admitted to using the card to book the room. He then told officers where to find the woman’s cards in his coat pocket. The other contents of the wallet and the wallet itself were not recovered.
Frazier was taken into custody and charged with unauthorized use of a credit card under $1000, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by a prison sentence of up to two years. He’s also charged with 5th degree theft, a simple misdemeanor.
