An Iowa City man who was accused of stabbing his roommate back in January pleaded guilty to a lesser charge and will not serve any additional jail time.

Iowa City Police responded to the Muscatine Avenue residence of 38-year-old Wayne Saterfiel at 7:22pm January 24th. Upon arrival, officers located a victim who had sustained significant, but non-life-threatening injuries.  The victim was transported to the hospital for treatment.

An investigation determined that Saterfiel and his roommate had been in an argument when Saterfiel pulled out a pocket knife and stabbed the victim in the leg and abdomen.

Saterfiel was arrested and charged with Willful Injury Causing Serious Injury.

Saterfiel pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of assault while displaying a dangerous weapon, an aggravated misdemeanor. He was sentenced this week to 274 days in the Johnson County Jail, the same amount of days he previously served regarding the incident.

Saterfiel was charged with Attempted Murder in 2004 for shooting bookstore clerk Jacob Broadrick at the Adult Marketplace on Kirkwood Avenue. Experts for both the defense and prosecution said they thought Saterfiel was insane at the time because he had no motive. He didn’t know Broadrick and didn’t take anything from the store.

Saterfiel was found not guilty by reason of insanity in July of 2005 after a 10-minute bench trial.

Had he been convicted of the original charge for the January incident, Saterfiel was looking at up to a ten-year prison sentence.
