An Iowa City man who had warrants due to probation violations was arrested on domestic abuse charges Monday morning.

According to police, they were called to the 2000 block of Davis Street on reports of a domestic altercation. The woman involved told them that she had an argument with 21-year-old Jeremiah Dean, during which he threatened to “smack” her.

The woman went outside the residence to take her son to the school bus, with Dean following her. He is then accused of hitting her in the cheek with an open hand and spitting in her face. As he stormed back to the house, Dean reportedly kicked the woman’s 3-year-old daughter out of the way, knocking her down.

The woman said that she and Dean had been living together intimately for a year.

Previously, Dean had been convicted of two counts of Forgery, but had his sentence suspended with probation and was to make payments to the court. As of December 2018, he had vailed to make any payments and failed to attend scheduled appointments, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Dean was taken into custody and charged with Domestic Abuse Assault and Child Endangerment. The new charges carry a prison sentence of over two years if convicted.
