An Iowa City man faces a new charge relating to a violent weekend attack at a convenience store.

23-year-old Keith Kizart of Westwinds Drive and 21-year-old DeJuanyae Jones Jr. of North Towne Court in Cedar Rapids were booked into the Johnson County Jail early Sunday afternoon.

According to arrest records, Kizart and Jones confronted and assaulted the victim just after 11am Sunday at the Mormon Trek Kum & Go. The two are seen on surveillance video punching, pushing, tackling, then stomping on the victim. They also allegedly pistol-whipped him with a Co2 gun. One witness told police Kizart pointed the gun at the victim as if he were going to shoot him.

Police say the attack as unprovoked.

Jones then drove away from the scene with Kizart. The victim was taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics with a head injury, bleeding from the head, a left eye swollen shut and a possible concussion.

Kizart and Jones were each initially charged with Assault While Using or Displaying a Weapon and Willful Injury Causing Serious Injury. If convicted of both charges, they each face a maximum of 12 years in prison.

Kizart now faces an additional charge of Going Armed with Intent. Police say a witness can be heard on surveillance video saying, “Oh my God he’s going to shoot him” when Kizart pointed the gun at the victim.

Kizart was later found with the gun, which was broken, when arrested. He told police he used it because the police had taken his real gun.

If convicted of the latest charge, Kizart faces a maximum of an additional five years in prison.
