A Coralville man has been taken into custody after allegedly accusing his fiancé of cheating on him and hitting her with a hammer.
According to reports, officers were dispatched to the 400 block of Heritage Place in North Liberty Thursday at 8:40pm because of a 911 hangup. Upon arrival, they witnessed a woman behind the front door to the residence and blood on the floor. They also made contact with the man involved, identified as 58-year-old Walter Cole of 10th Street.
Cole allegedly stated that his fiancé came at her with the hammer and hit him first. He then took the hammer away and reportedly hit her with both his hands and the hammer. He also told officers that he was uninjured. However, the fiancé had a different story.
She claimed that as she arrived on scene, Cole had the hammer in his hand and hit her with it, and believes he did so because he believed she was cheating on him the night before. The woman had swelling on her forehead, and complained of pain in her arm and other bodily injuries. She was transported via ambulance to the hospital.
A no contact order was requested, and Cole was informed that he’s not allowed back to the residence without a court order, to which he allegedly responded that he will be back.
A search of Iowa Courts found that Cole pleaded guilty to Domestic Abuse Assault in September 2016.
Cole was arrested and charged with 2nd offense Domestic Abuse Assault and Wilful Injury causing Bodily Injury. If convicted, Cole could be sentenced to up to 7 years in prison.
