A Cedar Rapids man is accused of purchasing golf equipment with bogus checks.

According to police, 54-year-old David Synacek of Shaeffer Drive Southwest went to the Quail Creek Golf Course in North Liberty on August 14th and bought a set of golf clubs and clothing that totaled nearly $1100, using a check from his personal account. It was only after the check was deposited that it was determined the check was written on a Collins Community Credit Union account that had been closed since August of 2016.

The clubs were found pawned the next day at Play It Again Sports in Iowa City. Staff there identified Synacek as the person who pawned them.

A little over a month later, on September 16th, Synacek is accused of using a different account to write a check at Brown Deer Golf Course in Coralville for a driver. That account was found to have been closed since November 2016.

A check of Synacek’s records show half a dozen previous theft convictions.

He was booked into the Johnson County Jail late Wednesday night and charged with third degree theft for the August incident and fourth degree theft for last month’s incident. If convicted on both charges, Synacek could be sentenced to a prison term of up to three years.
