A former area baseball club president has been charged with first degree theft after being accused of misappropriating club funds.

According to police, 40-year-old Adam Henderson of Cedar Rapids was named president of the Clear Creek Amana Baseball Club in July of 2017 and eventually assumed the role of treasurer after the person in that position resigned.

This past June, Henderson wrote a check on the club account that bounced, prompting an investigation by other club personnel. That led to Henderson’s resignation, and authorities say that he reportedly made incriminating statements in a text message.

The club reported the theft to the Sheriff’s office, and they began an investigation. A check of financial documents found that Henderson had misappropriated club money for personal use by writing checks to himself on the club account, making cash and ATM withdrawals from the account, using the club debit card to make purchases for personal use, and writing checks to pay his rent. Henderson also allegedly deposited club funds into his personal account.

The investigation also discovered that Henderson used funds for dining, travel, and to pay child support. In total, the amount of funds stolen was in excess of $30,000. A subsequent interview was conducted, and Henderson allegedly admitted to the thefts, saying he took full responsibility.

A warrant was served on Henderson overnight, and if convicted on the charges, he could be sentenced to up to ten years in prison.
