An Iowa City man was taken into custody after threatening a man who was trying to intervene in a domestic incident.
Police were called to the 900 block of South Gilbert Street Sunday at around 6:45pm for a fight in progress involving one of the combatants displaying a knife. Both parties were on scene when officers arrived.
The victim told police that he heard a male and female yelling and then observed the male shoving the woman. The victim tried to verbally intervene in the fight, and that’s when the man, identified as 34-year-old Kurtis Ventry of South Dubuque Street, displayed a knife and threatened to kill the victim.
When questioned, Ventry allegedly admitted that he displayed the knife and added that he and the victim don’t know each other.
Further investigation into the incident discovered that Ventry and the woman have been in an intimate relationship and have lived together for over a year.
Ventry was taken into custody and charged with Assault While Displaying a Dangerous Weapon and Domestic Abuse Assault. If convicted on the charges, Ventry could be sentenced to over two years in prison.
