An Ohio man faces charges that he attacked an Iowa City Police officer.
Officers were conducting foot patrol on the Ped Mall just before 9:30 Saturday night when they observed 43-year-old Scott Gareau of Lakewood, Ohio, stumbling and yelling at and trying to start fights with other pedestrians. He showed multiple signs of intoxication, and allegedly refused to follow officers’ commands.
Gareau allegedly tried to pull away as he was being handcuffed, and continued yelling at officers and other pedestrians. Police say he physically resisted being placed into a squad car, and spit on an officer.
Gareau is charged with Assault on Persons In Certain Occupations, Disorderly Conduct and Public Intoxication. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of 14 months in jail.
