Two presidential candidates were in town Thursday ahead of Friday’s LGBTQ Forum in Cedar Rapids.

Senator Kamala Harris spoke at Backpocket Brewery in Coralville during the late afternoon to a full house. The Senator brought up what she called the elephant, or as she jokingly referred to it, the donkey, in the room, the subject of electibility.

The senator said she’s been told that she couldn’t get elected in every race she’s won, and despite reports in the media to that effect, the reason she got elected is that the people refused to listen.

Harris added that she will be a familiar face in Iowa, pledging to visit the state every week in October.

Later in Iowa City, Senator Elizabeth Warren spoke to an overflow crowd behind the Iowa Memorial Union along the banks of the Iowa River, reiterating her “I have a plan for that” theme and, not surprisingly, got the biggest applause when proposing free public college and trade school tuition and wiping out student debt for the majority of Americans.

Warren also talked about today’s Climate Strike, saying that it’s a crucial point in our history when it comes to climate change and thanking those that are participating.

Warren will do a walking tour of the Golfview Mobile Home Park in North Liberty this afternoon, while Harris has a town hall in Waterloo. Both candidates will appear at tonight’s LGBTQ forum in Cedar Rapids at Coe College. They will be joined by Joe Biden, Marianne Williamson, Joe Sestak, Julian Castro, Cory Booker, Amy Klobuchar, Pete Buttigieg and Tulsi Gabbard. Many candidates also plan on attending the Polk County Democratic Steak Fry in Des Moines on Saturday.
