The Iowa City City Council has made their preference known on how to proceed with the Bicycle Master Plan.

At issue was the possibility of adding bike lanes to portions of Dodge and Governor streets between Burlington and Bowery streets. Doing so would require the elimination of 40 on-street parking spaces.

In neighborhood meetings on the subject, those living in the Dodge Street area seemed okay with the plan, but those in the Governor Street area didn’t want the on-street parking removed due to the few off-street options available to them.

Taking the feedback into consideration, the Council is recommending elimination of on-street parking and implementing a buffered bike lane on Dodge Street, but keeping the parking on Governor and having a shared lane with pavement marking and signage.

The recommendation now goes back to the Transportation department for implementation.
