A University of Iowa student has been arrested after police say he drunkenly tried to convince sleeping residents that he lived at their house.

Iowa City Police received a report of an intoxicated subject trespassing in a house on North Johnson Street just before 1:30 Friday morning. Responding officers found 20-year-old Ethan Thompson of South Gilbert Street outside. They say he showed multiple signs of intoxication, stated that he had been drinking, and was now “faded” from excessive alcohol consumption.

Thompson was only wearing one shoe. The other was located inside the residence.

The residents told police that prior to their arrival Thompson had entered the house, gone to an upstairs bedroom and tried to convince the occupants that he lived there.

Thompson was arrested for Public Intoxication. Once at the jail he allegedly tried to open the door of the squad car from the inside. He told police he was attempting to abscond from custody.

Thompson was fined $65.
