A North Liberty man was arrested early Friday morning after being found with ammunition in downtown Iowa City.

Police were called just before 1am on a report of two subjects in the alley behind Martini’s bar loading a gun. An officer spotted two individuals in that area a few minutes later and stopped them.

One of the individuals, 28-year-old Keylynn Rogers of Parkview Court, immediately told the officer that he was holding a magazine from a friend’s gun. Rogers explained that his friend has a permit to carry but couldn’t keep the large magazine in his pocket and it dropped to the ground, so Rogers picked it up.

Upon inspection, the officer determined it was a long magazine and loaded with 12 9mm rounds.

Rogers is a convicted felon and has numerous weapons charges, most recently convicted of being in possession of a firearm as a felon this past December.

He was arrested and charged with dominion or control of a firearm by a felon, a class D Felony punishable by a prison sentence of up to five years.
