The Johnson County Auditor’s Office has announced that there will be no need for a primary election in Iowa City or University Heights this year.
The 5pm deadline passed Thursday with neither city meeting the requirements for a primary.
In Iowa City, there would have had to be five candidates for the at-large seats; only three have filed for the two open seats. They are Megan Alter, Laura Bergus and Janice Weiner. Three candidates for either of the district seats would be needed for a primary, but John Thomas and Pauline Taylor are running for reelection unopposed.
In University Heights, there would have had to be three candidates for mayor or 11 for city council. Mayor Louise From is running unopposed, and seven candidates are running for the five City Council seats. They include incumbents Dorothy Maher, Liesa Moore, and Silvia Quezada. The other candidates area Casey Cook, Sara O’Sullivan, Bobby Scott and Doug Swailes.
Tuesday at 5pm is the deadline to challenge any of the candidate’s paperwork, and the deadline to withdraw nominations.
The filing deadline for other cities in Johnson County and for school district positions is 5pm September 19th.
The election will be held on Tuesday November 5th.
