The “Core Four” city council seats are up for reelection this November. And the window for those interested in running is closing fast.
The deadline to file nomination papers with the Johnson County Auditor’s Office is this Thursday. Candidates running for at-large seats must turn in a petition with at least 128 signatures, while those running for a seat in District A or District C must turn in at least 131 signatures.
The Core Four – Mayor Jim Throgmorton and councilors Rockne Cole, Pauline Taylor and John Thomas – will be halved, as Throgmorton and Cole have announced they will step down at the end of their current term.
Currently, Pauline Taylor and John Thomas have no opponents, and three people have filed to run for the two at-large seats. Megan Alter is the latest to announce her candidacy, doing so last Wednesday. She joins Laura Bergus and Janice Weiner.
Additionally, four seats on the Iowa City Community School Board need to be filled for the November election. So far, only one area resident has filed candidacy paperwork. Charlie Eastham ran unsuccessfully for a spot on the Board back in 2017.
Terms expire this year for board vice president Paul Roestler, and members Shawn Eyestone, Lori Roetlin and Phil Hemmingway. Hemmingway is moving out of the district and has announced he will not run for reelection.
