A Quad Cities-area woman faces numerous charges after leading Iowa City Police on a chase in a stolen car.
Officers on patrol ran the plates of a 1990 Oldsmobile just after midnight Thursday and discovered the vehicle was stolen out of Scott County. The officer attempted to pull the vehicle over, but it sped away on Washington Street at approximately 50-60 miles per hour.
During the ensuing chase, which ran from the 600 to 1000 blocks of East Washington Street, the driver ran two stop signs before crashing. The driver, later identified as 18-year-old Sharkera Patterson on East Moline, then fled on foot. Police say she left the car running and in gear.
A police K9 tracked Patterson to Ralston Creek, where she was found hiding in the creek bed. During a search incident to arrest, a small baggie of marijuana was found on Patterson’s person. Investigators also learned she did not have a valid driver’s license.
Patterson is charged with Eluding While Participating In a Felony, 2nd Degree Theft, Interference with Officials Acts, Possession of a Controlled Substance, Failure to Maintain Control, No Valid Driver’s License, Parking Without Stopping Engine or Setting Brake, Reckless Driving, and two counts of Failure to Obey a Stop Sign. If convicted on all counts, she faces a maximum of over 11 years in prison.
