Area first responders and local hospitals will be participating in an emergency training exercise focused on the University of Iowa Campus Wellness and Recreation Center Tuesday.

The training gives a chance for multiple jurisdictions to test how to best respond to an incident involving an armed assailant.

The Wellness Center and surrounding area will be temporarily closed during the exercise to ensure safety. That includes Madison Street in front of the facility, one lane of eastbound Burlington Street in front of the Center, westbound Court Street between Front and Madison Street, northbound Front Street behind the Center, and sidewalks in the areas noted. Parking Lot 11 at Court and Madison Streets will be closed to the public but open to permit holders.

The exercise will involve a fictional law enforcement response, and first responders will treat volunteers pretending to be victims.

The public is asked to try to avoid the area and to be patient if travel is necessary through the site.

The exercise is expected to start around 7am and should be complete, with the area returned to normal, by 2pm Tuesday.
