A Cedar Rapids man faces charges that he tried to elude University of Iowa Police by leading them on a chase across campus over the weekend.
A UI Police officer reports seeing a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta fail to obey a traffic control device near the intersection of Capitol and Washington Streets, near the Old Capitol Town Center, just before 11:15 last Saturday night. The driver, later identified as 21-year-old Davis Echolas of 11th Street NW, reportedly refused to pull over despite the officer activating his lights and siren. Police say Echolas reached speeds over 25 miles per hour over the speed limit as he led the officer on a brief chase before finally coming to a stop on Park Road.
Echolas was arrested and charged with Felony Eluding and Driving While Barred. If convicted on both counts, he faces a maximum of seven years in prison.
