The Iowa City City Council has selected a contractor to oversee the replacement of City Park Pool.
City Construction was chosen for the project at Tuesday’s meeting.
The budget to replace the pool was set at nearly $14 million.
The Council has spent years discussing the renovations, and provided the public with a number of different re-designs for their feedback. They also held in-person and online open houses, focus groups, and public surveys.
An assessment of the pool in 2023 by Williams Architects found a number of issues, including physical damage, structural deterioration, and severe water leaks.
The Daily Iowan reports a total amount of over five million gallons of water was lost during 2022, with an increase of around 55,000 gallons of water loss per day in 2023.
The approved design includes new entry options, gender-neutral restrooms, six 50-meter lap lanes, and inclusive accessibility, including ramps, in-water stairs, and zero-depth entry.
Construction is set to begin this spring; the goal is to reveal the new pool during Memorial Day weekend 2026.
