An Oxford man was taken into custody after being stopped for an equipment violation.

Police observed 57-year-old Steven Wright operating his vehicle near the area of Lakeside Drive and US 6 East at around 12:10am Monday. A back light was out, prompting a traffic stop.

The officer gave Wright a written warning, but when asked to step out of the vehicle to sign the citation, Wright reportedly refused.  When he eventually complied, he allegedly kept touching his waistband with his hand.  Wright was then placed in handcuffs for safety’s sake.

Officers then allegedly noticed methamphetamine in plain view in Wright’s sweatshirt pocket, causing a probable cause search. Police reportedly found 4 individual plastic bags containing meth, a syringe, and a plastic tube used for smoking the drug.

Wright was taken into custody and charged with a Class B Controlled Substance violation and Failure to affix Drug Stamp. If convicted on both counts, he could be sentenced to up to 30 years in prison.
