Iowa City stands to lose tens of millions of dollars due to funding cuts initiated by President Donald Trump.
That’s according to Mark Cuban, who specifically cited Iowa City in a post on Bluesky Saturday. Cuban wrote on the social media site that the University of Iowa losing grants from the National Institutes of Health would cost the Iowa City area $71 million. The tech billionaire says the loss represents about $1,000 per Iowa City resident, and that the $71 million does not include losses from grant funding cuts to Social Security, the Food and Drug Administration, and other organizations.
A UI grad student replied that 13 out of 15 people in one of his classes were planning to transfer. Other replies said Iowans are getting what they voted for, but others argued Iowa City is being specifically targeted for voting Democratic in a Republican-controlled state.
Cuban reached his statistics by using a website called scienceimpacts.org.
