US Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks declined an invitation to attend a weekend town hall event in Iowa City.

The Daily Iowan reports hundreds attended the event on the Ped Mall Saturday, sponsored by the American Federation of Government Employees and Iowa City Federation of Labor. The event was originally scheduled for a 200-person room at the Iowa City Public Library, but when the room reached capacity 45 minutes before the scheduled start time, the town hall was moved outside.

Jennifer Sherer, a former president of the Iowa City Federation of Labor, organized the event. She said people are looking for a place to have their voices heard. The crowd led chants of “Where’s Miller Meeks,” “Tax the rich, fund the people,” and “Stand up, fight back.”

Mazahir Salih, Iowa City Mayor Pro-Tem, said her sister and nieces were among the thousands of refugees who had already been approved to come to the U.S. but were prevented from doing so after Trump suspended the refugee resettlement program just days after his inauguration.

VA employees said they felt abandoned by Miller-Meeks and pushed for her to take a stand on mass firings that have affected vets, UI biomedical researchers and US postal workers.

Miller-Meeks is a member of the house DOGE Caucus, and called Elon Musk a successful business owner and said in January she looked forward to advancing President Trumps agenda to reign in wasteful spending and protect taxpayer dollars.
