An Iowa City man was arrested last week after an incident earlier in the month where he allegedly caused multiple injuries during an assault.
Police say 28-year-old William Ortiz was near the intersection of Dubuque and Washington Street at 2:40am March 14th when he allegedly struck a person without provocation in the face. When the victim fell to the ground, Ortiz reportedly continued to punch them in the face four more times while they were lying on the concrete, including after it appeared the victim had lost consciousness.
The victim sustained multiple injuries causing permanent disfigurement and/or requiring surgery. They included a broken nose, several broken teeth, a laceration requiring stitches between the eyes, and a laceration to the lips.
A warrant was issued March 18th; Ortiz was picked up the next day and charged with Willful Injury causing Bodily Injury, a Class C Felony punishable by a prison sentence of up to ten years. A no-contact order was issued by Judge Jason Burns.
