US Senator Chuck Grassley got an earful and then some as he hosted a town hall event in Hampton Iowa Friday.
Multiple sources report that the event, held in the Franklin County Courthouse, wasn’t big enough for the overflow crowd. Hundreds were turned away while others lined up outside the room and on the stairways. Chanting from individuals gathered outside in the parking lot could be heard as Grassley fielded questions from an agitated crowd during the town hall.
Numerous speakers took issue with President Donald Trump’s advisor Elon Musk and his recent slashing of jobs and funding for government functions approved by Congress. Several pleaded with Grassley to do his job.
Constituents also complained about Musk’s blatant conflicts of interest going unopposed by Congress.
The Gazette reports Sac City resident Bill Brenny asked Grassley, as chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, “Why do you believe that President Trump is above the law? And I’ll just reinforce what other people have been saying here. Why have you not spoken out for it?”
Grassley tried to compare what Musk is doing with DOGE to cuts made by previous Democratic administrations, which was greeted with loud disagreement.
Grassley told reporters after the raucus meeting that he frequently advocates for Iowans, including pleading with President Trump to exempt Canadian potash from the tariffs, as it is the most commonly used fertilizer in the state.
Audience members said they appreciated that Grassley held the town hall and took the time to hear from them, knowing that he would probably face a tough audience.
