The Iowa City Federation of Labor is hosting a town hall meeting Saturday and have invited US Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks to hear from her constituents.
Billed as a Town Hall with (or without) Miller Meeks, the event will focus on how major federal cuts, funding freezes, and illegal firings of federal employees are affecting Iowans. Despite numerous invitations from constituents, Miller-Meeks has not scheduled any public events during this week’s Congressional recess, so local labor organizations are hosting a town hall to provide a venue for residents of the 1st Congressional District to voice their concerns and questions, which will be delivered to Miller-Meeks’ office if she does not attend in person.
In a release, the ICFL says Miller-Meeks has bragged that she was proud to join Elon Musk’s “DOGE Caucus” and has not opposed illegal terminations of frontline federal workers who serve Iowa veterans, seniors, farmers, and businesses, and who keep food, water, and airlines safe. Miller-Meeks also supports steps the Trump administration is taking to defund, understaff, or privatize major essential programs and agencies including Medicaid, Social Security, Veteran’s Affairs, USDA, NIH, the US Department of Education, the US Postal Service, and more.
The event starts at 2pm Saturday at the Iowa City Public Library.
