An Iowa City man wanted for missing two different case management conferences was charged with assault after an altercation with police Tuesday.
48-year-old Jonathan Kim of Woodland Heights Drive was served on January 7th for missing his case management conference stemming from an assault with a dangerous weapon charge that occurred last April. A new case management conference was set for March 10th, which Kim also missed.
Police located Kim on the 1100 block of Gilbert Court at around 11:45am Tuesday, approached him and called out his name. Kim allegedly attempted to walk away from the officer.
When the officer caught up with Kim, he reportedly began swinging at the officer, striking him in the face. Kim was taken to the ground, but he continued to punch the officer in the face and tried to kick him.
The officer suffered multiple injuries, including lacerations to his lip and hand.
Kim was charged with Interference with Official Acts causing Bodily Injury and Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations causing Bodily Injury. If convicted on both counts, he could be sentenced to up to three years in prison.
The Assault with a Dangerous Weapon charge is an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by a jail term of up to two years.
