A Cedar Rapids woman faces up to three decades in prison after allegedly stealing from an aunt suffering from dementia.

The Gazette reports 55-year-old Tammy Koenen was acting as her aunt’s financial power of attorney. Police say she stole nearly $11,500 from the 79-year-old between September and January.

When interviewed by police, Koenen reportedly admitted to making weekly payments to herself , giving loans to herself, and transferring money to her account from her aunt’s account.

A warrant was issued on March 7th; she had her initial court appearance March 15th and posted a $15,000 bond on Monday ahead of future court dates.

Koenen was charged with 1st degree Theft and Dependent Adult Abuse. If convicted on both counts, she could be sentenced to up to 30 years in prison.
