A West Branch man was arrested after an investigation allegedly determined he provided false information in an attempt to acquire a weapon.
21-year-old Amarian Riley of Lou Henry Lane was arrested January 1st for a reported domestic assault. He was subsequently served with a protection order, specifically prohibiting him from possessing firearms and ammunition as long as the order was active.
Riley reportedly went to Fin and Feather in Iowa City on January 27th with intentions of purchasing a firearm. Video surveillance allegedly showed him handling two different handguns and several different boxes of ammunition. He also reportedly wrongfully checked that he was not the subject of a protection order during the incident.
A warrant was issued for Riley’s arrest on February 10th. He was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon and charged with Dominion or Control of a Firearm by a Domestic Abuser and Making a False Statement in Acquiring a Weapon, both Class D Felonies. If convicted on both counts, Riley could be sentenced to up to ten years in prison.
