A rally is being held in Cedar Rapids and other Iowa communities to protest plans to privatize the Post Office.
The Iowa Postal Workers Union, saying “the U.S. Mail is not for sale,” will be rallying with community allies on Thursday at 11:00AM, in front of the Main Post Offices in Cedar Rapids, Perry, Ottumwa, and Waterloo.
Postal workers are sounding the alarm about a proposed plan by the Trump administration to unlawfully take over the independent public United States Postal Service and transfer it to the U.S. Department of Commerce or possibly break it up or sell it off completely.
The Union says this will have a greater impact on Iowans and Rural America who depend on the Postal Service as a vital component for the economic stability of communities. The USPS is an independent entity, largely self-funded by the sale of stamps or charges for packages and services –not taxes. Only Congress is authorized to change the structure of the postal service.
“U.S. Mail is Not for Sale – Day of Action” events are planned all over the country. Other cities include Washington, Atlanta, New York, Detroit, Dallas, Denver, Orlando, Cincinnati, Los Angeles, Nashville, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Buffalo, and Seattle.
