An Iowa City man has been sentenced to over three years in prison for his part in a Muscatine firearms case.

The charges stem from a shooting on Logan Street on May 3rd of 2023. A Rock Island Armory 1911 .45 caliber handgun was found inside a nearby apartment, as was 22-year-old Javeyel Jones.

Testing from the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation reportedly found Jones’ fingerprints on the gun. Jones is a convicted felon, and is thus unable to legally possess a firearm.

Jones was given a deferred judgment and three years of probation on a Dominion or Control of a Firearm By a Felon charge in 2022 after he was seen handling a rifle at Scheel’s in Coralville and Iowa City Police found a loaded Glock 10mm handgun inside his vehicle outside his home on South Scott Boulevard. A 2024 investigation also found that Jones had a second gun in West Liberty. He pleaded guilty to a charge of Possession of a Firearm as a Felon last week and was sentenced to 41 months in prison.
