A bill making its way through the Iowa legislature would require that at least 80 percent of the medical and dental students seeking degrees at the University of Iowa be from Iowa or attended college in the state.

The bill passed the Iowa House on Wednesday; it also gives preference to Iowans for residency positions at University of Iowa Health Care. KCRG TV reports the bill was introduced by Republican representative Ann Meyer of Fort Dodge. She says in the past four years 81% of Iowa natives left the state to do their residencies or training after medical school.

During debate on the bill, Iowa City representative Adam Zabner said the bill would hinder the UIHC’s ability to recruit top talent from around the country; Meyer said the bill intention is to help, quote, “grow our own.”

The bill moves on to the Senate.
